See Scarlett Johansson in explosive new Ghost In The Shell trailer.
The first trailer arrived earlier this week for the highly discussed and controversial Rupert Sanders Hollywood remake of 1995 Japanese anime classic Ghost In The Shell.
“Cyborg counter-cyberterrorist field commander The Major (Scarlett Johansson), and her task force Section 9 thwart cyber criminals and hackers. Now, they must face a new enemy who will stop at nothing to sabotage Hanka Robotic’s artificial intelligence technology’.
With its reported 180,000,000 budget a lack of star power outside of Johansson and source material unfamiliar to most of North America, ghost in the shell is a massive financial gamble. Not helping matters is the fact the film has been plagued with accusations of whitewashing its characters to appeal to a wider audience. Paramount will be hoping for big returns from fast expanding Asian markets such as China, South Korea and Japan.
“There [are] all sorts of people and nationalities in the world in Ghost in the Shell,We’re utilising people from all over the world. There’s Japanese in it. There’s Chinese in it. There’s English in it. There’s Americans in it.”
Producer Steven Paul spoke out about the ‘whitewashing’ accusations ensuring that the film will have a international feel, utilising a cast of various nationalities. The Blade Runner esque world that Sanders has created looks truly amazing and appears to support this. Even if Ghost In The Shell fails to reach the philosophical depths of its original at least it will look beautiful.
Ghost In The Shell also stars Takeshi Kitano, Pilou Asbaek and Michael Pitt. It will be opening in North America from March 31st 2017.
